HTML head tag HTML head tag

Every HTML webpage is divided into two parts - Head and Body. Once you mark the start and end of an HTML webpage using the <html> tag, you have to divide your webpage into head and body sections. To mark the boundary of the head section of a webpage HTML has provided you with a <head> tag.

Used inside the <html> tag, the <head> tag helps you mark the start and end of the head section of a webpage. The head section of a webpage is majorly used by the browser or the search engines. The information present in the <head> tag is hardly of any use to people who visit a website. The content you write in this tag is not displayed in the browser and therefore the user cannot read it. This section contains information which helps a browser and search engines learn about a webpage better. The information present inside the <head> tag is called metadata.

What is metadata?

To put it very simply, metadata is information about information. You can think of it as a summary that briefly tells about the whole information. When search engines visit a webpage they use the metadata present inside the <head> tag to quickly get familiar with the whole webpage. Search engines love the <head> tag and the information it provides them. Therefore, if you skip the <head> tag in your web page you might have problems in your search engine rankings.

What type of information we write inside the <head> tag?

Inside the <head> section of a web page you can give your webpage a Title, write the important keywords which tells about the type of text written in the webpage and also write a brief description about the page.

Your goal should be to use the <head> section to give as much information about your web page as possible so that the search engines understand your web page better.

How to use the <head> tag ?

<html> <head> // Start of the tag // Summarize your web page in the best possible manner in this section. </head> // End of the tag </html>
