What is a web page and a web site What is a web page and a web site

As a web developer you will be using HTML to create your websites. Website and webpages are two concepts closely related to HTML about which you should understand as a web developer. In this tutorial our goal is to help you understand the meaning of a webpage and website and how they both are related to each other.

Web page

When you write your HTML code you save it in a file with .html extension. For example, if you are writing HTML to display the names of all the students in your class then you can save this file as allstudents.html. This file which gets created on saving your HTML code can also be called an HTML document or a web page. If you create 5 HTML files it means that you created 5 web pages. Each web page has some specific purpose. Like for example, you might create a web page to display all the products which are sold by a company, or a web page to display all the employees in a company. Each and every web page is created by keeping some goal in mind so that the information on the page can be organized to fulfill the end goal.

Web site

A collection of related web pages is called a website.

A website is always created to serve a bigger purpose of organizing information about a specific subject. For example, you might want to create a website for a school where you want to display all the information related to that school. Now you cannot show all the information on a single webpage as this will look very disorganized and untidy. The better way of organizing this information is to create different webpages to show different type of information and then combine all these webpages to create a single website.

HTML is used to create individual webpages and all these webpages combined together creates a website.

Website Navigation

A website might contain anywhere between a single webpage to millions of webpages. The question to be asked is that when a user visits your website how will he / she move from one webpage to another in your website. This can only be made possible by adding an easy to follow navigation in the website which will present the user with a very simple way to understand which information to find on which page. For example, look at the example navigation below

Here you can see different menu option which guide you on how to move to different parts of the website. To visit the home page of the website you click on the home menu in the navigation and to visit the contact us page you click on the contact us menu in the navigation. Without a easy to follow navigation it will become difficult for the user to know how to move to different sections of the website.
