What is amniocentesis. Why has the government imposed a statutory ban in spite of its importance in the medical field.

C.B.S.E 2010

Answer

 This test is used for:

a) Determining the sex of the foetus.

b) Diagnosing chromosomal abnormalities in the foetus.

In this technique small amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the foetus is withdrawn with the help of the syringe from the uterus of the mother. Cells of the skin of foetus are used to identify some abnormalities in the number of chromosomes and to detect biochemical and enzymatic abnormalities.

It is banned because some people are misusing it to know the sex of the child and in case the child is female it can even lead to female foeticide.
