What are gemmules.


Gemmules are buds found in the body of fresh water sponges like Spongilla and in few marine sponges. They consist of group of cells called archaeocytes. Archaeocytes are surrounded by protective coat. On the return of favourable conditions, archaeocytes comes out through micropyle and forms new colony.
