Why should a bisexual flower be emasculated and bagged prior to artificial pollination.

C.B.S.E 2010

Answer

Bisexual flowers contain both anther as well as stigma. So anthers are removed from the flower bud before it dehisces with the help of forceps. This process is called emasculation. This is done to prevent self pollination.

In artificial pollination experiments it is important that only the desired pollen grains fall on the stigma and the stigma is protected from unwanted pollen. That is why bagging is done in which the emasculated flower is covered with a bag to prevent contamination.
