•    The outer layer of pollen grain is made up of hard layer called exine. The exine is made of sporopollenin.
•    Pollen grains are preserved as fossils because of the presence of sporopollenin.
•    Sporopollenin is one of the most resistant organic substance known.
•    It can withstand high temperatures and strong acids and alkalis.
•    Sporopollenin is not degraded by any enzyme.
