.net and COM assemblies

When you start working with the .net framework you will hear about two types of assemblies - .net assemblies written using managed code and COM assemblies written using C++ code. COM assemblies is an older concept, this was used before Microsoft created the .net framework. The difference between both these assemblies is that the .net assemblies contains managed code which follows the rules of the .net framework whereas the COM assemblies contains unmanaged code which does not follow the rules of the .net framework.

Avoid using COM assemblies in .net projects

It is not recommended using COM assemblies in your .net application. This is mainly because you should not be mixing the managed code with unmanaged code. But still if you have to use a COM assembly and there is no other alternate then you can use COM assemblies in your .net project just like you will use .net assemblies.
