How to use windows command prompt - Part 1

In the article What is a command prompt you learnt how to open a command prompt on a Windows operating system. In this article you will start learning some of the very basic commands which you can run using the command prompt application. We will cover the following basic commands in this article

  1. Date - Used to display your computer's current date
  2. Time - Used to display your computer's current time.
  3. Cls - Used to clear all the text from the command prompt screen.

Date command

The date command is used to display the current system date on the console windows. Using this command you can also change the date of your computer if you wish to. To use the date command just type date and press enter. Look at the animated image below

See how the current date of a computer gets displayed by using the date command. Also notice that after displaying the date the command prompt gives you an option to change the date. You can type in the new date and your computer’s date will get changed. Please keep in mind that you will need administrator privileges to change the date of your computer.

Time command

The time command is used to display the current time of your computer on the console window. Using this command you can also change the time of your computer if you wish to. To use the time command just type time and press enter. Look at the image below

Also notice that after displaying the time the command prompt gives you an option to change the current time on your computer. You can type in the new time and your computer’s time will get changed. Cls command

The cls command does the cleaning work for you. It stands for clear screen and using this command you can remove all the text being displayed on the command prompt and make it totally clean. For example, suppose you run the date command and then you want to clear the screen and run the time command. In this case using the cls command will clear all the text written on the command prompt window. Look at the animated image below

Here we have used the cls command to clean the command prompt after running the date command. In the similar manner you can make use of the cls command to clear all the text being displayed on the command prompt window.
