Category: GATE CSE-IT Date: Saturday, August 15, 2015

GATE CSE-IT is a very important exam for CSE and IT final year students because based on a good GATE score you will get good job and higher study opportunities. GATE exam is held around end of January or beginning of February every year. If you are finding an answer to the question “How to prepare for GATE CSE-IT 2016 exam” just 5-6 months before this exam then chances are that you might make mistakes in planning your complete preparation methodology. In this article we will try to give you some indicators to plan your GATE exam preparation strategy.

Before you start your GATE CSE exam preparation…

Please make sure that you go through the GATE CSE and IT exam syllabus thoroughly before starting your preparations. The syllabus will help you identify the important topics for each subject and save you a lot of time which you might spend on learning topics with very less importance in the GATE CSE and IT exam.

There are 2 preparation methodologies you can consider to prepare for your GATE CSE and IT exam

  1. Prepare theory first and then practice previous year GATE questions
  2. Look at previous year GATE questions first and then prepare theory

Let’s explain both these approaches in detail.

Prepare theory first and then practice previous year GATE questions

The first approach means that you pick up your books and start reading the theory to prepare for your subjects. This is actually a good and thorough approach to prepare for GATE exam but the problem is that if you have less time before exam then this approach can backfire because you might not get enough time to finish your theory and practice previous year questions. This approach will work very well in your favor if you start your GATE CSE and IT exam preparation well in advance. Also because not all the topics in your text books will have equal importance for the GATE CSE and IT exam you might end up wasting a lot of time on those topics which might have very less weight in the GATE exam.

Look at previous year GATE questions first and then prepare theory

This approach can help a lot if you are preparing in a short time span. In this approach you should buy previous year GATE CSE papers from the market and use them as your starting point for preparation. But keep in mind that you will get two types of books in the market – one which has previous year GATE CSE and IT exam questions collected in the form of previous year question papers and the other which will have GATE CSE and IT exam questions collected subject wise. You will need the book which has questions grouped subject wise. This way you can start solving the questions for every subject and read the related theory to understand the concepts properly. This approach cannot guarantee 100% success but surely will help you prepare to get decent to good marks in your exam. This approach will help you focus on the concepts which were asked in previous GATE CSE and IT exams and practice them well.

Best books to follow to prepare for GATE CSE and IT exam

The best books to read to prepare for your GATE exam are your graduation text books. These text books will help you create a strong theoretical base for each subject. Being conceptually clear about all subjects is important to solve GATE questions. You will never find questions being repeated in the GATE exam, but you will surely find concepts being repeated in the GATE exam. Your books are the best resource to understand the concepts. Reading notes or very brief theory given in GATE CSE and IT exam preparation books will not help much in creating a good conceptual base for the exam.
