Go To Definition in Visual Studio – What is it used for ?

Category: Programming Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2015

Goal

Understand the use of “Go To Definition” when writing .net applications using C#

Explanation

When you right click on any line of code in Visual Studio you will see an option which says “Go To Definition”. Look at the screenshot below

Go To Definition in Visual Studio

The purpose of Go to definition is to make it easy for you to look at the actual coding behind the word on which you are doing a go to definition. For example if you are doing a go to definition by right clicking on a class name then selecting this option will take you to the code for the selected class. If you right click on a function and select go to definition then it will take you to the definition of that function. And the same applies to a property also.

Look at the screen shot below

Here you notice that when you do a go to definition on Function3() it will take you to its definition below. You can try this out by writing code and doing a go to definition on it.
