Interview Question - Why is the size of the character datatype 1 byte.

In all the programming langauges the size of the character data type is 1 byte. Explain the reason behind this.

Char size is of 1 byte because accoding to ASCII standards to represent 128 characters needs 7 bits. Thats way Char size is of 1byte or 8 bits.

Character data type for all language have ASCII codes for each character. Since ASCII codes are nothing but interger numbers of 8 bits. Thus character data type is of 1 byte.
